If you decide to give it a shot, here’s the process. First, your acupuncturist will interview you — what are your symptoms, what’s your treatment and medication history, and so on. Next is a brief examination, looking at the coloring of your face and tongue, the strength and rhythm or your pulse. This is also the time to ask your own questions — what’s involved in the treatment, what’s the therapist’s experience with treating your condition and success rate, how many treatments are required, what’s the cost, and is it covered by insurance.
Once you’ve settled all the issues, you’ll lay down and the acupuncturist begins inserting the needles, usually between 5 and 20 of them. Most people don’t feel them at all and you probably won’t know where on your body they’re inserted, and that can be in some very unexpected places.
