Consider doing the trip as we did, in the southwest, near Ayr. Trying to get onto the Old Course at St. Andrews, which is on the eastern side of the country, is a hassle. You have to submit your name and then be lucky enough to be drawn in a lottery. It’s awfully difficult to plan a trip when you’re not sure when, or if, you’re on the course. Besides, within 15 miles of Ayr, there are four world class courses — Western Gailes, Royal Troon, Turnberry, and Prestwick.
Most important, bring lots of socks. Rain happens, not great downpours, but enough to keep most things wet all the time, and you’ll probably be walking for each round. If you don’t take the proper precautions, after a few days, your feet will look like you spent a month in a WWI trench. And bring lots of band-aids, because you’re likely to end of with blisters regardless.
