Compassion, empathy, and hard work will eventually begin to help the homeless. Each of us doing a small part, each of us reaching into our pockets, spending a few hours a week caring, a few dollars a week giving, and a few minutes a week talking to friends and neighbors about how to help is exactly what we need. This problem is not going away any time soon.
There are a multitude of reasons for homelessness which is not the focus of this article. What is important now is to understand the enormity of the problem, and to understand it is not acceptable, not to be overlooked because it has been around for some time, but rather that you can take action. You can be a small, yet important part of the solution. You can make a difference.
On a national level feedingamerica.org, mercyhousing.org and the unitedway.org all help. But you can look for smaller local organizations in your area that work where you live. Even the small towns we live in have homeless problems. It is no longer only the big cities.
Reach out to your local service organizations, the Salvation Army, the local food bank.
Whichever one appeals to you, help out there. Just being a good listener twice a week is a great start. Take action now, to help our neighbors in need.
We can all make a difference.
