Wineries…Italian Style

When I search for one to visit, I look for something unique and appealing about the winery. Maybe their website shouts out about coming for a visit, or the photos of the grounds are interesting. Sometimes the wines themselves are outstanding, and sometimes they’re just ok, but the experience almost never disappoints. Here are a few that I’ve found to be particularly enjoyable in different parts of the country.

Sicily

Benanti is located in Viagrandi, on the slopes of Mount Etna. They sell wines throughout Italy, and while they’re hard to find in the U.S., in Italy, they’re very well-respected. The winery is definitely old-world, with antique wine-making equipment and carts placed in strategic locations. After almost 2 hours of eating and drinking, I told the guide that we really should be going. She mentioned this to the owner and he came over to ask, “Why are you leaving?” I explained that we had a reservation to visit another winery. “Which one?” he asked. I told him the name and said, “Why do you want to go there? It’s just a big commercial winery!” I said I dunno — what the hell else do you say to such a question? He continued, “We’re celebrating the 70th birthday of that gentleman over there. Come stay for the party!” We wriggled our way out of the invite and headed off to the big commercial winery, and Signore Giuseppe was right — we should have stayed at Benanti.
