Talking to Grandchildren

How to deal with sensitive issues

Throughout their trajectories, families can face a variety of problems, such as divorce, chronic illness, the passing away of a loved one, financial difficulties, and so forth. Oftentimes grandparents find themselves thrust in the middle of some of some sticky situations, such as divorce, and want to be there for their grandchildren.

The problem is, how do you, as a grandparent deal with such situations? What are the appropriate conversations to have with grandchildren — ones that are supportive of the child yet keeps you out taking sides with one parent or the other?

Podcasters Peter Goldsmith and Bill Wood discuss this topic with Dr. Lou Primavera, Psychologist, Therapist, and Dean of the School of Health Sciences at Touro College.
