Get there before the invasion begins.
Apulia, or as we say in the U.S., Puglia — pronounced pool-ya — is at the heel of the Italian boot. Having traveled extensively throughout Italy, this is by far the country’s most underrated region. I finally made it here this year, and I could kick myself for not having gone sooner.
What really stands out about Puglia — it’s not entirely ready for tourism, and by that I mean it feels authentic. Not to the same extent as Calabria, but definitely more so than Tuscany, the Lakes Area, or the Amalfi Coast. Let’s face it, when you visit these destinations, it feels like show time. They’re just a little too cute. Disney could not have laid them out any better, except maybe for the parking.
