Sardinia — Part 1

Stupid cheese aside, there’s a lot to see in Sardinia, and like Corsica the only way is by car. The terrain is rugged in parts and that makes for fantastic panoramas and road-rally type driving, but no worse than other mountainous countries.

We’ve set up three itineraries to cover the different geographic regions and the range of Sardinian themes. We used Porto Cervo as the home base. Even though it’s in the Northeast, this area has a variety of accommodations, and its a great area to hang out when you’re done sightseeing for the day. As the only drawback, we do not cover the southern tip of the island. There are some interesting places in that area, but not as many as in the north, and it would require lengthening the trip by 2-3 days. You will certainly get a good enough feel for Sardinia by sticking to what we’ve outlined here.

This first itinerary, laid out on the map below, is about 107 miles round-trip, and focuses on the North East portion of the island, the billionaire playground. So, this is all about high living, to either participate or just observe.

There are 8 destinations on this tour, including Porto Cervo. Each town offers something significant or unique, some are modern and others are old and charming. If you’d like a shorter drive, you can cut it down to about 65 miles by eliminating Santa Teresa Gallura and Tiscali — note that the latter is just to visit a Nuraghic archeological site, and requires some hiking. Take a look at the photos below, or go to the linked websites for each town, and that might help you make your decision.
