Lombardy
We strayed off from the typical reds/whites wineries and opted to visit the Franciacorta area, just west of Lake Garda where dozens of wineries produce a sparkling wine, similar to Prosecco, and, dare I say, champagne. This is not my favorite form of beverage, but I’ve never tried Franciacorta, and something different is almost always worth a shot.
In searching out a specific winery, I was struck by how enthusiastic they all were for a visit. That was nice, but I got the feeling they’re a little lonely, or maybe they suffer from prosecco/champagne envy, and are fighting for some attention. Either way, I had the feeling that whichever winery I chose, we would be treated well.
I decided on La Montina, and treat us well they did. In fact, it was awarded the title of “The Most Welcoming Franciacorta Estate” by the people who do such things. It turns out that La Montina is also a popular site for Italians, as it hosts at least one wedding or other special event at least once per week. A look around the grounds makes you understand why.
Trying the wines followed the typical pattern — drink, eat, talk. But what was particularly interesting was the art work. It turns out that art is a passion of one of the owners, and of mine, so upon hearing that I speak some Italian, he insisted that I look through collection with him. No problem — drinking wine and looking at art is not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
