If you’re looking to make an investment in art, these artists can give you an opportunity for some capital appreciation. It’s easier to build from an investment of $5,000 to something higher — what can a $150 million dollar painting build to?
Of course, like any investment, the value of art can go down just as easily as it can go up. That’s particularly true today, as there was an art bubble that recently burst. Here’s a good, or sad, example: Niels Kantor is an art dealer who paid $100,000 for a painting by Hugh Scott-Douglas, and expected to resell it quickly for a profit. Unfortunately, he’s now looking to dump it for $20,000, or whatever he can get, and this all took place within a two year span.
So spending a lot on a painting can be dangerous and painful — even the experts get burned. But it’s a lot less painful when the decline is from $5,000 than it is from $150 million.
The key to investing in art is to buy only what you love. That way if you don’t get a return on your money, at least you won’t be staring at something that annoys you for rest of the time you’re together.
