Looking for Great Radio?

Check out Bob and Cheri

I grew up on “Imus in the Morning”. As a teenager, Don Imus played right into what I wanted — very irreverent and outrageous. A little later on, it was Howard Stern, more of the same only more so. Both were shock, but they were more than that. These programs were creative, funny, and ground-breaking.

But at my age shock and outrage no longer work — been there, done that. I prefer something that gets me smiling and laughing through wit and mature content, and not vulgarity or by leaving me gaping.

And so I got turned on to the Bob and Sheri show. I know — you’ve never heard of them, and neither did I until my wife gave me an introduction while we were living in Charlotte, NC. I’m not much of a radio guy, so at first I’d hardly listen, more like once in a while I’d hear some background noise. But then I’d find myself chuckling, and listening a little more intently. Eventually, I came away with a feeling that these guys are good, and listening to them is a feel-good experience.

And while they may be new to you, they’re bigger than you might think. Bob Lacey and Sheri Lynch have been co-hosting their show since 1992, beginning at WLNK in Charlotte. Today it’s syndicated and owned by Westwood One, and runs live in more than 60 affiliate stations around the country, as well as worldwide in 177 countries and 150 ships at sea through the American Forces Network.

And that’s not all. The Show has been nominated four times for Billboard’s “Air Personality of the Year” and 10 times for the NAB’s Marconi Award, and won the New York State Broadcasters Association Award for Best Morning Team. Sheri has won the Gracie Allen Award three times, and Creative Loafing’s “Best Local Radio Personality” every year for a decade.

The Bob & Sheri Show is mostly comedic, but not in a “morning zoo” style with lots of ranting and raving. They’re not political, but they cover social issues and norms. Their comedy is witty, clever, and thought-provoking, but never offensive. They’ve recently added oddcasts to their repertoire, and these are a bit more racy, but still not over the top.

Bob and Sheri openly share their quirks and personal lives with listeners, creating an atmosphere of intimacy with the right amount of crazy. They have call-ins to talk about issues, and have a couple of regulars in the cast –Max Sweeten, Todd Haller, and Lamar. Together they deliver a dynamic show, but it doesn’t feel canned or contrived — it’s that natural. It’s more like you’re listening to old friends chatting — it’s that comfortable.
