TARQUINIA — 63 MILES
Ancient Tarquinia, one of the 12 original Etruscan cities, is best known for it’s Etruscan tombs and is one of central Italy’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. There are about 6,000 tombs located just outside the town, of which about 200 were painted inside with colorful frescoes. Paintings date from the 6th century BC, and 15 tombs are usually open each day for visitors.
As any medieval city, Tarquinia is a maze of narrow streets, but not all are very interesting. Rather than trying to find the best parts on foot, I would suggest you drive through Tarquinia’s medieval center near the main piazza, Piazza Cavour. In that you can quickly find the sections you’d like to stroll around. Tourist Information can be found in Piazza Cavour.
