Racy Ladies of 1920’s Blues

Clara Smith

Clara Smith was known simply as ‘Queen of the Moaners’  even though in reality she possessed a sweet melodious voice. She was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1894 and died young in 1935. Although she was not related to Bessie Smith and never reached Bessie’s renown, she did record a duet with Bessie and played with some of the great musicians of the 1920’s and 30’s, including Louis Armstrong and James P, Johnson. She is credited with recording 122 songs for Columbia Records.

Here is one she did for Columbia in 1929…please give a listen to It’s Tight Like That.
