Prose and Poetry

The Dairy Farmer’s Husband

Yes, you remember it now?

More than a poet, Sandburg was a preeminent Lincoln scholar. His six volume biography (divided into The War Years and The Prairie Years) is a wonderful read, whether you are interested in the subject, or just wish to delight in beautiful syntax, rhythm and pacing.

His prose work is highlighted by Storm over the Land, which he called a “profile of the Civil War.”  (It is a look at the war through Lincoln’s eyes). Other important works include Remembrance Rock, a massive novel about three hundred years of the American Dream, and his autobiography, Ever the Winds of Chance, was completed by a daughter after Sandburg died.

His poetry is best exemplified by his published collections The Chicago Poems and The People Yes! (His favorite). There are countless other smaller collections.

He was a fine folk (guitar) musician, his American Song Bag is an enormous collection of hundreds of folk tunes.
