The Sound of One Hand Clapping

A belligerent wise guy from Queens told me that he needed philosophy more when he was young, but now that he was old(er) he pretty much had made up his mind about most things and the rest he figures he can manipulate on the run.

Ok, so now that we have the playing field, how do we play the game? Like most things in the world, we can break down the ideas by Eastern and western Culture. Usually Eastern means inner and Western means in conjunction with… or outer. The major Eastern schools take an approach that allows the practitioner to find the “answers” within, usually through some form of mediation or internal searching. Western schools are far more pragmatic and look for the “intelligent, intellectual” answer, what Descartes called the Empirical.

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.
