The World Cruise Ship

Some trips are well beyond the ordinary. In the summer of 2012, “The World” became the largest passenger ship to sail through the Northwest Passage. For trips to places like Antarctica or Greenland, professionals and academics might be contracted to set up these expeditions and will offer lectures on history, geography, culture and such. In one trip to Madagascar, the residents were accompanied by a National Geographic photographer, an anthropologist, and a marine biologist.

Here’s a description of what life aboard is all about:

As good as it sounds, it wasn’t always smooth sailing for the yacht. In it’s first couple of years, the company ran into financial problems due to unsold apartments, so they decided to use a single deck as a hotel for non-owners. However, that didn’t work out too well — there were lots of complaints and feelings of resentment that “cruisers” (that’s what they were called by owners) could pay very little to get the same benefits as the owners. Maybe they just didn’t like mixing it up with the common folk, but whatever the reason, the hotel/tourist idea was shelved. Today, none of the rooms are available to rent.
