Josephus: The Complete Works by William Whiston and Thomas Nelson
Whiston’s anthology features the unabridged works of the first-century Pharisee, soldier, Roman informant, great historian, and writer. Includes the earliest independent accounts of Jesus’ life; insight into the beliefs of the Sadducees and Pharisees; an account of the Jewish revolt against Rome; and a full eye witness account of the Second Temple in Jerusalem.
Although you will not get through the entire book unless you are on an around the world cruise with your mother-in-law, for the most part the writing is delightful, current and extremely informative. Josephus was the consummate politician…always knowing which side to come down on and leaving loyalty to someone else. His eye witness accounts are the only ones that still survive today of the Second Temple. This is a great book to pick up and spend an evening with, then put it back and wait till the next vacation!
