Silly things aside, I have to admit that I developed a comfortable connection with Calabria and an affection for it’s people. Maybe it was the simplicity of style or a feeling that it’s honest, or the lack of hard-selling of wares. Whatever the reason, the region holds a warm and fuzzy place in my heart.
So, if I haven’t scared you off, then here are a few more tips — Calabria is ridiculously hot in the summer, and October to February is the rainy season. So that leaves a small window — September, or March – April. And being in the South, you can also be sure that the Calabrians take their riposo (siesta) very seriously. Many of the smaller towns are shut down completely between the hours of 1pm and 4pm every day. There’s not much you can do about that if you’re out and about, but at least you won’t be surprised when you arrive in a town and there’s no place to eat.
