A Return to Community

Overriding the individual

America seems to have lost it’s way. Today we define ourselves as consumers, and we pay more attention to indulging our personal interests and less on the person standing next to us. This change in direction certainly begins with the person, but it’s also fostered by corporations and reinforced to some extent by our local politicians. With the focus on ourselves and our stuff, we’ve surrendered our sense of community — we can feel alienated from each other, and we’ve lost some of our compassion and empathy, trust in institutions, and open-mindedness to ideas and opinions that are not our own. It’s no wonder we all find it so difficult to communicate with those on the other side of the aisle.

In this podcast, our hosts Peter Goldsmith and Bill Wood look at the value of community for America. Peter and Bill believe Americans need to commune with each other, communicate with each other, and create a version of America in which community is more important than the individual. That’s a way we can tear down walls and build bridges between all Americans.
